11β-HSD1 is expressed in the liver, adipose tissue and muscle, where it regulates intracellular cortisol levels.
Key strengths
- Root-cause target: Controls the cause of metabolic dysfunction by suppressing cortisol overproduction, not appetite.
- Validated mechanism: Weight loss, lower blood glucose, improved lipids and reduced insulin resistance have been reported in many animal models of obesity (ob/ob, DIO) and diabetes (KKAy, ZDF).
- Oral, safety-first design: Unlike injectable obesity drugs, an oral medicine that is easy to give every day lowers the burden on pet owners.
- Pipeline scalability: A single target can extend from obesity and diabetes to skin disease and other cortisol-related conditions.
- Development efficiency: Because veterinary drugs are tested for safety and efficacy directly in the target species (dogs and cats), development is faster and more efficient than for human drugs.
